I don't often wear make up. When I do wear make up I brush some powder on my face (which I'm sure falls straight back off) and I apply some mascara. I don't feel the need to cover my face in loads of gunk to face the world, that's just not me. And it never has been.
Teaching in a year 5 class last week I had a girl come up to me and very bluntly say, "You don't wear make up, do you?" My TRT brain suddenly clicked in. Was she asking an honest question or was this one of those situations where the kids are trying to test you, just to see what you'd say.
I smiled at her and explained that I think my face is beautiful just the way it is, but I sometimes do wear mascara for fun (I wasn't on this day though). She went on to tell me that her mum wears too much make up it looks like cake frosting and that she'd never seen a teacher who didn't wear make up before.
In the end I was glad it wasn't a trick question and she happily skipped back to her seat to tell her friends what I had said.
